What are dental implants?

Dental implants are the most popular choice for patients who lost or damaged their teeth beyond repair. This surgical procedure replaces the root of your tooth with a metal post positioned directly in your jawbone. For most patients, this is a simple multi-step procedure. First, your damaged tooth is extracted. If needed, a bone graft is then surgically inserted in your jawbone to support the future implant. Next, the implant is placed in the affected area, followed by an abutment (the titanium screw) which connects your implant to your new tooth. Finally, a dentist will measure & install a new, custom-made crown on top of the abutment to complete the dental implant process.

Depending on your age, oral hygiene, prior drug use, and a variety of other factors, the complete process of getting your new tooth could take anywhere from three to twelve months. This might seem like a long time, but the actual procedure is very straightforward. The only reason why this process takes so long is because your jawbone needs time to heal to ensure the implant will last a lifetime.

Dental Implant Costs in Tijuana, Mexico

One of the most significant factors affecting the overall cost of your dental implant is where you live. The price varies greatly across the US and is generally higher in urban areas. The type of implant used (traditional, mini implant, or All-on-4 implant) is another factor that determines the final cost. The price will also be higher if you require a bone graft or sinus list. Finally, the cost of your implant may also be higher if you choose a titanium, zirconia, or ceramic implant.

The average tooth implant price at Excel Hospital, in Tijuana, Mexico, is $3,500 / tooth.

Dental Implant Process in 5 simple steps:

Benefits of Dental Implants

Dental implants are one of the most popular techniques to replace missing or damaged teeth. Here
are the top benefits of getting a tooth implant at our Tijuana, Mexico, dental clinic.

They last a lifetime.

Crowns typically last 5-10 years, and dental bridges usually last around ten years. Bio-compatible titanium implants (meaning your body won’t reject them) can last a lifetime.

Prevent bone loss

Within the first year after a tooth extraction, the bone area under the tooth loses 25% of its volume. An implant replaces the root of your tooth and the tooth itself, so the natural bone growth process is restored.

Improve oral health

Dental implants improve chewing and biting functions, putting less pressure on the teeth around your extraction. They also help you avoid gum disease because the gap created by a missing tooth attracts food and bacteria.

Improve speech

Missing multiple teeth can alter speech patterns over time. Similarly, patients often report that loose or slipping dentures can negatively affect their speaking ability. Dental implants make it possible for patients to maintain standard speech patterns.

Boost your confidence

Dental implants are virtually indistinguishable from your natural teeth. Boost your self-esteem with a tooth implant that will last a lifetime. Stop worrying about missing teeth and restore your confident smile with a dental implant today in Tijuana, Mexico.

Won't get cavities

Although you will need to brush your artificial teeth just as you would your natural teeth, the material your tooth implant is made of will not decay over time. With an artificial tooth, you never again need to worry about a cavity.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do Dental Implants Work?

Getting your new tooth implant is a multi-step process.

In the first step, your experienced dental surgeon in Tijuana, Mexico takes an X-ray of the affected area to determine the exact placement of the implant.

If your damaged tooth has not already been extracted, the dentist will remove your damaged tooth. Dentists typically use an elevator device to rock the tooth back and forth until it becomes loose. Using dental forceps, the tooth is then removed.

If the tooth is a molar, it sits beneath the gum so a different method is employed.  Your surgeon will first make an incision in your gum and bone tissue before removing the tooth. This last step may add to the overall recovery time and delay your actual implant installation.

Typically, the next step in the implant process begins only after your jawbone and gum fully heal after an extraction. If your tooth was removed at least six months before coming to our office and you have a healthy jawbone, the time involved in placing a new implant is significantly reduced.

Assuming the implant area is healthy, the dentist will surgically plant a post made of titanium into your jawbone (your actual implant). This is a relatively painless procedure that typically takes less than 15 minutes. Your dentist may prescribe some medication for gum pain, but patients usually do not experience pain or discomfort after installing the implant.

Once the post is installed, the affected area must heal, which usually takes 3-4 months. During this phase, your post will fuse with your natural jawbone, creating a strong, life-long foundation for your new artificial tooth.

The next step involves installing an abutment, a small connector, placed on top of your dental implant that connects the base of your implant to your new crown. After the abutment is installed, most patients will get their final tooth within thirty to sixty days. This last process can be done at our clinic or with your local dentist.

Dental crowns typically last for five to ten years and will eventually need to be replaced.  Your actual dental implant should last a lifetime. Contact our dental implants Tijuana experts today for a free consultation.

What is the Recovery Time for Dental Implants?

Depending on the stage of your implant journey, you may or may not need to worry about any recovery time when getting a dental implant in Tijuana, Mexico. The only downtime you may experience is during the phase of extracting a damaged tooth, not during the process of getting an actual implant installed.

Let’s walk through some scenarios that may affect your recovery after your dental implant in Tijuana, Mexico.

The recovery time will be longer if your damaged tooth has not already been extracted before you come to us. If you require a bone graft to support your future implant, that will add to the overall recovery timeline. In this scenario, assuming your tooth has not been extracted, and you need a bone graft, most patients will stop experiencing discomfort between two and five days.

If your tooth has been extracted and your affected area is healed, installing a post (your actual implant) is quick and painless. Your dentist will usually complete this step in fifteen to twenty minutes. You will experience limited discomfort, but any pain should cease within 24 to 48 hours. That said, most dentists will prescribe pain medicine to limit your downtime. Most patients can go back to work or go about their lives right after the implant has been installed in their jawbone.

The following step, adding the abutment to your implant, is a painless and quick procedure. Patients do not require any local anesthetic, so no recovery time is needed at this stage.

Installing a crown is also painless.  The affected area no longer has any nerves that could cause you pain. The dentist will take a mold of the area, create a new crown and install it on top of your implant. This will be done in one 30-30 minute visit. No recovery is expected for this stage, either.

How Long Do Dental Implants Last?

Most dental implants placed at our Tijuana, Mexico clinic will last a lifetime.

Some factors could affect your implant’s life, and others may prevent you from having an implant. For example, diabetes, smoking, or severe gum disease could disqualify you from being a suitable candidate for an implant.

You do have to care for your dental implant in the same way you take care of your overall dental health. Dental implants should last a lifetime if you visit your dentist frequently (every six months) and take care of your teeth. Even with an implant, you are still susceptible to gum disease, the most common cause of tooth loss in adults. You still need to brush your teeth twice a day and floss as often as possible to avoid building up plaque and ensure your gums are healthy.

The same life choices that could lead to losing your teeth will also lead to losing your implant. For example, excessive drinking and smoking may reduce blood flow to your implant area.

Sometimes, your implant’s lifespan could be affected by facial injuries, chewing hard substances, or using your teeth to open bottles. Just like with your natural teeth, consider using implants for their intended use: biting and chewing food.

What are the Parts of an Implant?

We use three major dental implant components at our Tijuana clinic.

Implant Metal Fixture: This is your actual tooth implant. It’s almost always made of medical-grade titanium, a material not recognized by your body as a foreign object. This is important because most patients never worry about their bodies rejecting the implant. Some clinics use zirconium or ceramics as alternative materials, but this practice is less common. The dental post replaces the root portion of your missing tooth and is installed directly into your jawbone. A dentist will use a special drill to insert the new implant into your bone. Any pain you may experience at this stage is caused by your gum tissue, not the actual bone. Over three to six months, this implant will fuse with your jawbone and become functionally indistinguishable from the root of any of your other healthy teeth.

Abutment: an abutment is simply a connection point between your implant and your artificial tooth. It screws into the implant previously surgically installed in your mouth. And your new crown will “hook” into the abutment to complete your new artificial tooth.

Crown: If you have had crown replacement before, you are likely familiar with how crowns. Dental implant crowns are fitted directly on the abutment; a standard crown is installed on your existing tooth. In general, the overall process is the same.  A dentist will take measurements of your affected area and send them to a medical-grade lab to create your new tooth. When the new crown is built, a dentist will install it on top of your implant.

Are there any complications with a tooth implant?

Tooth implants usually have very few complications. According to the American Dental Association, complication rates are less than 5% with dental implants, significantly lower than with other procedures.

This low complication rate is due to the customized treatment plans dental surgeons create based on your medical history, life choices, and other factors that may negatively impact your implant’s lifespan.

Placing dental implants is a streamlined process performed for over fifty years. The room for error is limited and oral surgeons rarely deviate from the proven and successful standard process of installing a tooth implant.

Some risks and complications of dental implants include infection, nerve damage, bleeding, and jaw fractures. However, most healthy adult patients should not worry about these complications.

In some rare cases, patients may face implant failure or rejection, sinus problems (when implants are placed in the upper jaw), or experience loosening or breakage of implant components. Our oral surgeons in Tijuana, Mexico, typically mediate these issues by not rushing to install an implant and extending the timeline between the different phases of an implant to limit the risk of complications.
