What is the difference between an invoice and a fiscal receipt?

Under Mexican laws, an invoice or fiscal receipt is a commercial and fiscal document used to support a purchase-sale transaction of goods or services between a seller and a buyer. The invoice is a fiscal proof that must comply with the requirements established by the Tax Administration Service (SAT), the tax authority in Mexico.

In contrast, in the United States, the terms “receipt” and “invoice” are often used interchangeably to refer to a payment document issued by a seller to a buyer. Generally, a receipt or invoice in the United States will include information about the seller, the buyer, transaction details, prices, taxes, discounts, and payment method.
